Some things just never go out of style... John's Drive In in Kitty Hawk is an Outer Banks classic. As a matter of fact, EVERYTHING about John's is retro 1960s.
Located on the Beach Road (the "official" address being 3716 Virginia Dare Trail), John's Drive In is within walking distance of many Kitty Hawk vacation rentals. It's a beach shack with limited parking and some picnic tables. Fancy? No. Yummy? Yes! John's is your place if you're craving some classic American fare, fried seafood or something for your sweet tooth.
John's menu includes old standbys such as burgers and fries but many people opt for their Fish Boat (a basket of 
fried fish and chips). However, John's milk shakes are probably their claim to fame. My personal favorite is chocolate but they offer everything from strawberry or blueberry to peanut butter. It is really the perfect way to cool off during your Outer Banks vacation.
Be prepared: During the summer months, John's Drive In ALWAYS has a line. This is not the place to go if you are in a hurry. Relax, enjoy the sea breeze and hang out with the family while waiting on your food. Another option is to call your order in ahead of time.
If you're looking for air conditioning and an elegant dining experience, John's is NOT for you. If you want classic food in a charming beach environment, then I highly recommend it. John's is old-school Outer Banks at its best!
