Five Tips for a greener vacation:

1. Leave those travel sized shampoos, deodorants, toothpastes, body washes and other toiletries at home. They create more waste than regular packaging. Instead opt for refillable travel containers, which can be used on your next vacation.

2. While you are in the Outer Banks, make use of the miles of bike and pedestrian pathways. Walking along the beach is an eco-friendly way to travel.

3. If you have to fly to the Outer Banks, try to take a non-stop flight. Airplanes use the most fuel during landing and takeoff. The fewer stops you make, the smaller the level of carbon emissions.

4. Carry a digital camera for taking pictures rather than a disposable one. And make sure the batteries are rechargeable instead of disposables.

5. Consume local food. Eating at local restaurants will not only stimulate the local economy by ensure your carbon footprint is small. Local restaurants rather than commercial chains tend to use locally grown or caught ingredients. The travel time and carbon footprint for the food will be significantly lower. And the freshness is unrivaled.
