The 14th annual Wings Over Water Wildlife Festival will be held on the Outer Banks from Nov. 9-14, 2010.
Wings Over Water is a celebration of wildlife and history in the Outer Banks and includes birding, paddling and photography programs, as well as, a number of opportunities to learn about the natural and cultural history of the area. Kayakers and canoeists are invited for a small fee to go on guided tours through the backwaters, the sounds and even the ocean to see a wealth of natural diversity. Registration currently is open for a variety of exploratory expeditions guided by experts who are familiar with the most optimum areas to see wildlife. Physical demands range from open water with wind exposure, to short distances with shielded from the elements. Birding expeditions are available for those at the beginner level to specialists who are searching for a life-list species.
Dare County has over a quarter of a million acres in wildlife conservation, making the Outer Banks a prime location for observing the huge diversity of marine life, hundreds of species of birds, black bears, alligators, red wolves, deer and fox. The region offers some of the country’s best paddling for canoe and kayak enthusiasts. From cypress-filled swamps to endless marshes, it is possible to paddle the Outer Banks for years and still discover unexplored areas.
