If this sweet little foal doesn't make you smile, then something might just be wrong with ya! Thank you to the folks at the Corolla Wild Horse Fund for sharing this lovely pic.
The baby girl's name is Esperanza, or "Hope" in Spanish. She was born on the Currituck Outer Banks within the area designated as a wild horse sanctuary. The horses that roam freely within the reserve are often called "Banker Horses." They are the descendents Spanish mustangs brought to the "New World" by ship during the 16th century. The horses lived in isolation on the northern Outer Banks; surviving harsh storms and living on the sparse vegetation. In 1989, a group of concerned citizens teamed up to protect and preserve the herd of beautiful wild horses.
Unfortunately, Esperanza had to be removed from the herd for her own safety. When a foal or colt is in danger, the Corolla Wild Horse Fund must make that difficult decision. Although their goal is for the horses to live freely with the herd, it sometimes isn't possible. However, lil' Esperanza is thriving - growing stronger (and cuter) every day. This foal shows that there is always "hope" for the future of the Corolla Wild Horses.
