Bell-Ringing on the Outer Banks...
I just finished my first 2 hour shift of bell-ringing for the Salvation Army. I volunteered in front of the Outer Banks Wal-Mart from 9:00 to 11:00 am. Wow! What a rewarding experience. (Although, yes - it was cold!) Everyone was friendly and most were generous as well. Even those who didn't drop something in the kettle shared a smile and pleasant greeting. Many people donated and then thanked ME for what I was doing!

One gentleman dropped a dollar into the kettle and then told me what a wonderful organization the Salvation Army is, and that he had received and appreciated their assistance in the past. He was happy to be able to give back so they can continue to help those with in need. People of all types donated, smiling as they dropped their coins or bills in the kettle. It seems to be a holiday tradition for many. Some people got in their cars to leave, realized they passed the kettle by, and circled around to drive up and give money. Kids had the most fun dropping coins and stuffing bills in; a bit shy...until I let them ring the bell!

My next round is at the Harris Teeter in Nags Head. My husband is starting that one off, with me joining him around 5:00. Good news is that we get to stand indoors! Blessed warmth!

I'm looking forward to my next shift. I've always given to the kettle, and always will, but this is a whole different experience. If you get the chance to volunteer as a bell-ringer one season, go for it. I think I've found a new holiday tradition!
