Beaches in South Nags Head will receive a face-lift thanks to the approval of the South Nags Head Beach Nourishment. Approved by both the city and state, sand will be pumped along 10 miles of Outer Banks shoreline in South Nags Head from this spring through October.
The 36 million dollar project has taken years to get off the ground. 4.6 million cubic yards of sand is expected to be dumped along the shoreline by Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Company. By mid-June residents and visitors will likely see the first of four dredges, the Texas, a vessel the length of a football field, pumping sand along the Outer Banks shoreline. Work will be limited to a 500 feet stretch of beach each day.
The town of Nags Head will work with all vacation rental property management companies to keep renters up-to-date on beach conditions. The beach nourishment is expected to last for 10 years and eliminate 16 years of erosion loss.
