The Grand Opening of the newly reconstructed Jennette’s Pier is less than a month away. On Saturday, May 21 at 11 a.m. Jennette’s Pier will open to the public.

Jennette’s Pier was originally constructed in 1939 in Nags Head, North Carolina and was 754 feet long. In September 2003, Hurricane Isabel swept across the Outer Banks and knocked down 540 feet of the 60 year-old pier, leaving the remaining portion unsalvageable.

In 2009, construction on the new $25 million dollar pier began. The new 1000-foot long fishing pier features live North Carolina Aquarium exhibits, a gift store, snack shop, and tackle shop. The pier will feature conservation programs both free and fee-based.

The opening ceremonies begin at 10:45 a.m. with the U.S. Army Golden Knights Parachute Team landing on the beach in front of the pier. An hour-long dedication ceremony will follow and then doors will be opened to the public. In celebration, Jenette’s Pier will offer free fishing for everyone the rest of the day.

There is no cost for this event, however parking will be limited. Satellite parking with shuttles will be available in the grassy field south of Dunes Restaurant and at the Town of Nags Head headquarters.

On Sunday, May 22, Jennette’s Pier will be open for fishing 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
