Think you've done it all on the OBX? You're really missing out if you haven't had an adventure on the 4-wheel drive beaches north of Corolla. These pristine beaches are located in the northern part of Currituck County and are commonly referred to as Carova. However, this is a bit of a misnomer since the area is really comprised of several communities including Carova, Seagull Beach, Penny's Hill, North Swan Beach and Swan Beach.

Nature still rules on this part of the Outer Banks. It's exciting, it's peaceful and it provides a glimpse of what the Outer Banks was like years ago. Plan a Carova vacation or at least daytrip to this gorgeous part of the OBX. But before you go, here are some things you need to know!

  • Yes, you REALLY get to drive directly on the beach! There are no paved roads in this part of Wild horses on the beach in Carova NCthe OBX. While this isn't everyone's cup of tea, I just love the experience. Driving directly on the packed sand or exploring the sandy roads behind the dunes gives you a sense of freedom. But please don't attempt to go in an all-wheel drive vehicle or make other mistakes that will get you stuck. Check out Sun Realty's list of driving tips for Carova and the 4x4 beaches. Be adventurous but don't do anything silly. :)
  • The name Carova is a contraction of Carolina (Caro) and Virginia (va). The area extends approximate 14 miles from northern North Carolina to the Virginia border.
  • Watch out for stumps! Depending on the tide, you can sometimes see tree stumps sticking out of the sand. These are the remnants of an ancient forest. (Definitely avoid these suckers when driving.)
  • The beautiful wild horses that can be found in Carova are the descendants of Spanish mustangs that were shipwrecked during the 1500s. These horses are true survivors, living off of limited vegetation in a harsh seaside environment.
  • Turtles and boars and birds, oh my! False Cape State Park and the Back Bay Wildlife Refuge are home to countless species including loggerhead turtles, wild boars, deer, fox, pelicans and other birds.

Not sure if you're ready to explore the 4x4 beaches on your own? Never fear, several reputable tour companies offer private and group excursions. Corolla Outback Adventures is one of several companies that we recommend.

See you at the beach!
