On December 17 in 1903 the Wright Brothers, Orville and Wilbur, began the journey of modern aviation with the first powered flight. 107 years later, the Outer Banks remembers that historic moment with a daylong festival of events at the Wright Brothers National Memorial at milepost 7.5 on U.S. 158 in Kill Devil Hills.
The anniversary celebration begins at 8:30 a.m. with the placing of the wreath at the site of the first flight. The Wright brothers, witnesses of the first flight and descendents of the witnesses will be honored. Other activities include a concert by the Northeastern High School Band, a variety of history programs and a fly-over. A pylon at the Monument to a Century of Flight in Kitty Hawk will be dedicated to "Women in Aviation."
Admission to the Wright Brother's Memorial will be free on December 17 to encourage participation in the celebration and anniversary of the first flight.
