For all the aviation history buffs and thrill-seekers out there, ever dreamed of piloting the 1902 Wright Brothers glider? Well now you’ll have the chance to do just that! Kitty Hawk Kites is giving the general public the opportunity to fly a reproduction of the 1902 Wright Brothers glider and experience flight just as the Wright Brothers did in 1903.
The reproduction was constructed using Orville & Wilbur Wright’s own project notes and photographs, first commissioned in 2003 for the First Flight Centennial . The experience will provide hands-on training, classroom instruction, and individual supervision. You will learn about the history, the controls, experience simulator time, and go through glider orientation. This unique experience is made possible by a partnership between Kitty Hawk Kites , The Discovery of Flight (commissioners & owners of the reproduction), and The Wright Experience (builders of the reproduction).
The public had a chance to take part in the Wright Glider Experience beginning on April 1, 2012. Reservations and lessons will continue through summer and take place at Jockey's Ridge State Park . The 4 hour experience is $349, with up to 5 students in a lesson. Flyers will be taken 5-15 feet off the ground with a distance of about 50 yards. This will be an experience you won’t want to miss!
