What you might not know about Corolla...
You've probably heard about Corolla, North Carolina's beautiful beaches and luxurious rental homes, but did you know that Corolla also has a rich and interesting past? Long before vacationers flocked to the seashore, Corolla was only accessible by boat. Early residents were isolated from the mainland, living humbly in tiny fishing villages. These hardy villagers tended gardens, hunted, and lived modest lives. They also combed the coastline in search of wood and supplies that washed to shore from shipwrecks.
Over the years, Corolla became home to the Currituck Beach Life Saving Station, a one-room schoolhouse, and a small chapel. On your next Outer Banks vacation, visit historic Corolla Village and step back into a simpler time. Walk or bike down the sandy roads and enjoy the shade of the live oaks. Tour the Currituck Beach Lighthouse, attend Sunday service at the Corolla Chapel, and visit the Corolla Schoolhouse (now home to the Corolla Wild Horse Fund).
In 1922, a wealthy businessman began construction on a massive 21,000 square foot residence. The homeowner's love of waterfowl hunting made Corolla the perfect location for a "winter cottage." This elaborate soundfront dwelling boasted Tiffany lamps, luxurious furnishings, and a copper shingled roof. Needless to say, Corolla villagers had never seen anything like it. A new economy developed as villagers began selling their goods to wealthy guests. Corolla residents also took visitors on guided hunting trips.
Today, this grand hunt club is known as the Whalehead Club. It was purchased and refurbished by Currituck County in 1992 and is now part of Currituck Heritage Park. This stately landmark is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and is a "must see" for Outer Banks vacationers. 2010 Whalehead Club Events
